Nicely Done!

The Major Car Teasure Hunt!

We would like to thank the lovely organisers from the Major Pub in Ramsbottom; Anita, Stu, Mark & Ste for putting together the most fantastic Car Treasure Hunt in History!

The event took place last Saturday, starting with bacon butties at 9am - followed by an afternoon of clues, photographs, dares and carried on into the evening with entertainment, auctions and raffle prizes to be won.

Because of the hard work and dedication involved - these truely extraordinary fundraisers managed to rake in £10k!!!!!!!!!!!

There was even a twist, where participants went in fancy dress as super heros varying from the Scooby doo gang to Batman and Robin!

This was an incredibly successful event in the memory of Frank Rafferty, helping to raise funds for the New Hospice which only has £500k left to find for the construction.

If this has inspired you to do a fundraiser please call 0161 763 1545 or email capitalapeal@buryhospice.org.uk

£500k Left to go!!!

Building work is set to start this summer on the new Bury Hospice – a state of-the-art facility to provide palliative care to the people of Bury.

Thanks to the generosity of local people and a large legacy the fundraising pot has now swelled to £3.6 million – enough to give the go-ahead for building work to get underway on the new hospice to be located on Rochdale Old Road.

Hospice fundraisers are now on the final push to raise £500,000 to provide all of the funds to fully build and equip the new hospice, which will be built by Bolton-based construction company GJ Seddon.

Michael Garrity, Chair of the Bury Hospice Trustees, said: “We are delighted to announce that the building phase can now get underway. As a board of trustees we wanted to be satisfied that enough money had been raised to fund the building programme.

“We have been working very closely, behind the scenes, with GJ Seddon to finalise the costs of the build, materials and equipment. We now have a definitive figure and are confident for work to get underway.

“Our fundraisers have also been working extremely hard raising money, increasing the profile of the campaign and telling people why we need a new hospice in Bury.”
Despite a challenging economic climate the Building a new Hospice for Bury fundraising campaign has got off to a good start.

Mr Garrity adds: “We have been overwhelmed with the generosity and support we have been given by the people of Bury. They have truly embraced the campaign and come up with some innovative fundraising initiatives.

“However, now that we are on the final sprint to the finish line we continue to encourage people to give us their support.”

Preparations are now underway for building work to start in July. However, before the foundations can be laid, ecology specialists will arrive on site to relocate a colony of great crested newts to a new home 500m behind the development. This has to be carried out in the spring once the newts have come out of hibernation.

The great crested newt is a protected species. As a result, GJ Seddon has had to apply for a special licence to survey the site as part of the planning process.
Ecology experts are now set to build a newt fence around the site of the new hospice to collect the great crested newts and relocate them to the neighbouring pond. This process follows strict guidelines set by Natural England.

Following the final costing of the development we will now be able to increase the number of inpatients who could be cared for at the new hospice from five to 12, instead of the 10 beds originally planned for.
The new hospice will provide state-of-the art palliative care equipment to allow individual packages of care to be developed - providing more choice for end of life care for the people of Bury.

The aim is for doors to open to the new Bury Hospice in January 2013.
As well as contacting the hospice team with your fundraising ideas, a new text to donate facility was launched recently.

Simply text Bury02, leave a space and text the amount you would like to donate after a £ sign and send your text to 70070. At the touch of a button contributors will be able to donate £1, £2, £3, £4, £5 or £10. The choice is yours. The donation will then automatically be added to your monthly bill, for example, to donate £5, text Bury02 space £5 to 70070.

For even more information on how you can help build a new Bury Hospice or to make a larger donation, contact the campaign hotline on 0161 763 1545, visit the dedicated website www.buildinganewhospiceforbury.org.uk or visit the Facebook page Building a new Hospice for Bury.

Joan makes a splash!

Swimming pensioner Joan Buggie took the plunge to raise money for Bury Hospice. She celebrated her 70th birthday by tackling an 80-length swimming challenge at Castle Leisure Centre in Bury. Mrs Buggie, of Shipston Close, Walshaw, completed the 2km swim in one hour and 10 minutes, raising £300 for the campaign to build a new hospice. She said: " Bury Hospice is a wonderful place and they desperately need the money. Being Bury born and bred, you never know if you or your family are going to need the service later in life."

Mrs Buggie, who will celebrate her 50th wedding anniversary this year, has been swimming twice a week since 1979 and trains at the same leisure centre where her husband Joe worked as a part-time instructor before retiring.

And despite her advancing years, Mrs Buggie is determined to keep fundraising. She said :"Maybe i'll do 100 lengths when i turn 80"

A Second 3K Offer

Bury Hospice had a nice surprise last week when another anonymous pensioner stepped forward to price match the Mystery Mans donation!

£3K was pledged by a mystery lady who had been brought up in Bury until her early twenties when she moved away. 60 years later and the pensioner still holds ties with her roots.

What would you be willing to donate? Ok 3K may be a lot to some of us - so why not break the costs up with a Standing Order form with what you can afford?

To buy 1 foot = £12 ( £1 a month standing order)
             2 feet = £24 ( £2 a month standing order)
             3 feet = £36 ( £3 a month standing order)
             4 feet = £48 ( £4 a month standing order)
             5 feet = £60 ( £5 a month standing order)
             6 feet ETC...

So if you are interested in donating monthly, quarterly, or annually please email or call us to request your standing order form.

If you would prefer you can pop into one of our 4 Charity shops in Bury, Prestwich, Radcliffe and Ramsbottom.

To contact us call 0161 763 1545 or email capitalappeal@buryhospice.org.uk

Match that Mystery...Man

Just to add a little bit of excitement to our lives, a man has stepped forward anonymously offering the Hospice £3,000.00 on one condition!

Three other people must come forward and match his donation of £3,000.00 in order for him to comply.

The gentleman admits he isnt the richest man in Bury, but felt it would be better putting his money to good use and wanted to find a clever way of raising funds for the New Build.

If three others were to step forward, that £12,000.00 could buy the majority of a small room in the New Hospice. If you think you would be interested in helping out please let us know.

And remember, it doesnt have to be a lump sum! You may prefer to set-up a standing order and pay £250 a month or ANYTHING you can afford! Whatever your wish, we can  try and tailor to your need - just give us a call on 0161 763 1545 or email capitalappeal@buryhospice.org.uk

If you think you have something special to offer and can help us reach our target please call 0161 763 1545 or email capitalappeal@buryhospice.org.uk

Schools all set for fundraising Choir Contest

(Thursday January 27th 2011)

Hundreds of school children will be hoping to hit all the right notes in Bury Hospice’s first choir competition. Pupils at 10 primary schools across the borough are taking part in the contest, which starts next Wednesday. Each group will consist of up to 50 children and they will sing two contrasting songs of their choice. Three heats will be held next week, with a panel of judges choosing which two choirs from each round will go to the grand final on Friday, February 11th.
The choirs will then perform again for the opportunity to win the inaugural competition. Up for grabs for the winning choir are a session with the Halle Choir’s vocal coach, Maggie McDonald, tickets to a Halle concert, music vouchers and a trophy. Smaller trophies will be presented to the winners of each heat and every child will receive a medal. Claire Warner, the hospices director of fundraising said: “ We are gobsmacked and delighted that so many schools are taking part. The thought of having so many children singing for the hospice is fantastic.
“The competition has already been more successful than we ever dreamed it would be, especially for the first event. Having seen how popular it is this year, we intend to make it an annual event.” Heats will be held at Radcliffe Civic Suite next Wednesday, Thursday and Friday, starting at . The February 11 final will start at the same time. The programme is as follows:

Brandlesholme Support Group

Bury Hospice relies deeply on the support of our community - whether it be businesses, schools or individuals. The idea of a support group allows people to come together to raise funds for the Hospice.

You don't have to have a background in fundraising, all you need is the motivation to want to help the Hospice! So if you fancy organising your own event or sponsorsed (something) feel free to give us a bell.

We can have as much or as little involvement as you like giving you support and advice if you need as well as resources for flyers, posters and tickets!

If you are interested in setting up a support group please contact our Community Fundraiser Michelle King on 0161 797 1748.

£1000 - Horsey Does It!

Bury Hospice would like to give special thanks to Hilary Hartley, the owner of Horsebits in Ramsbottom. By putting on a 'Christmas Extravaganza' during December 2010 the saddlery and riding wear shop raised a considerable £1000 for Bury Hospice!!!

Over £500 was raised through the shops tombola, silent auction and games! Hilary generously offered that whatever money raised from the event, she would price match - making a grand total over £1000!

Without people like Hilary it would be impossible for the Hospice to aim to reach such targets especially during the economic downfall.

If you are interested in helping our campaign 'Building A New Hospice For Bury' whether it be through donating £1 to £10,000 or more - please do not hesitate to give us a call on 0161 763 1545 or email capitalappeal@buryhospice.org.uk
